This position is located at the John I. Haas Innovation Center in Yakima, WA.  Yakima is the hub of hops production in North America.  Located in the Pacific Northwest on the east side of the Cascade Mountains, the surrounding area offers numerous recreational opportunities.  Seattle, WA and Portland, OR are only a short drive (< 3 hours) away.

The successful candidate conducts research within the Innovations team focused on new process development and process improvements. This is a hands-on position that involves (1) running lab-to-pilot-scale experiments/trials, (2) transferring new processes or revised process steps into the manufacturing environment, (3) working to ensure that newly developed or modified processes are performing as designed, and (4) operating collaboratively across different functional areas. 

The Associate Process Scientist solves problems within the area of hops and hop products, works to identify root causes of inefficiencies, and designs robust processes to positively impact the cost and quality of Haas advanced hop products, as broadly defined.

85%: Independently executes R&D trials on new hop processes or process improvements under minimal supervision and/or in teams. Works directly with manufacturing personnel to ensure that new processes or improved process steps are seamlessly transferred into the production environment. Maintains thorough, accurate, and orderly records for all relevant activities, including laboratory and pilot plant trials. Collaborates cross-functionally for the purpose of leveraging unique skillsets, developing processes, and fully implementing identified changes and improvements. Works up experimental/trial data and communicates results to appropriate stakeholders, both in written and oral forms.

10%: Operates and maintains laboratory and pilot plant equipment and instruments in a safe, clean, and orderly fashion

5%: Performs other duties as directed by immediate supervisor

The position will involve overseeing the successful transition of promising research into brewing application trials and through to commercialization.  Thus, qualified candidates will be knowledgeable and skilled scientists that are highly motivated and able to apply their talents to the development of new or more efficient processes and within varied areas.
LEADERSHIP QUALITIES:Ideal candidates will possess advanced problem-solving skills including the ability to think critically about difficult research challenges, critically examine existing processes, determine ways to “do things better”, and apply sound scientific strategies to design or evolve our process for better results.  To be successful, the candidate must thoroughly understand scientific methods of investigation, experimental design, standard research protocols, and be able to collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data. 

You must be able work with the commercial teams to refine and implement the process in a real commercial environment. This is not just passing research on to a development team. You are part of that scaling process within the Advance Products Team, working to make these experiments real applicable changes and improvements on the production and commercialization side. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a diverse research environment comprised of chemists, scientists, and brewers is expected.

§ Ability to perform the physical tasks necessary for the safe operation of pilot plant and laboratory equipment.

1. Work a 40-hour work week. May work more than 8 hours a day and/or on weekends as needs arise.

Preferred Qualifications:
•    Experience in hops, brewing, winemaking, or food processing
•    Familiarity and experience with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma strategies,    and process definition.
•    Direct experience in manufacturing
EDUCATIONBachelor of Science degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, food science, or a related scientific field
