The Opportunity: Director of Quality

Reporting to the Vice President of Manufacturing & Quality, the Director of Quality is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of all aspects of Quality Management, Food Safety, Regulatory Affairs, and Sustainability for John I. Haas, Inc. (Haas). This position represents Haas in trade associations and in government interactions. The director will lead the improvement and implementation of Quality, Food Safety, and Regulatory strategic plans as well as sustainability aspects, to support business plans and objectives. The position leads team of three direct reports (Quality Assurance Manager, Quality Control Manager, and the head of Sustainability) and has a total team of 10.


Specific responsibilities include:

Strategic Leadership (40%):

  • Provides strategic leadership for long-term planning and direction of the quality departments, fulfilling the Haas vision and business goals. Applies insight and creativity to develop a strategy and quality objectives that have both short- and long-term impact.
  •  The role will be responsible for Quality, Control, Quality Assurance and Sustainability. Quality Control will be the main emphasis, with heavy use of HPLC and UV testing to ensure the best hop quality.
  • People management and development:
  • Provides guidance and oversight for the quality teams in the areas of performance and development (including training).
  • Provides insight, guidance, action, and oversight on the prioritization of project and task management.
  • Has “hands on” approach; leads and is directly involved in projects and their completion.
  • Interacts with internal teams to keep informed of new projects generated from R&D, Manufacturing, Sales, etc.

 Industry and Customer involvement (25%):

  • Networks with industry, customers, competitors, vendors, etc., to understand industry views on issues that impact Haas. Works with them to be a voice for the business and help shape policy.
  • Handles the responses and investigations to customer’s complaints. Issues a formal written response to customers’ complaints when necessary.
  • BarthHaas Group Global Quality: Interacts with the BarthHaas Group Global Quality teams to standardize information and share ideas and processes that benefit the entire group.

Audits (15%):

  • Provides guidance to manufacturing plants during external audits, follow up on corrective action, responses, as well as direct interaction with customers and/or government officials.
  • Coordinates, trains, and leads audit teams to assess food safety status of suppliers, external manufacturers, warehouses, etc. Ensures effective strategies are in place to monitor continuing compliance of these external parties and challenge them to continuous improvement.

Regulatory issues (15%):

  • Identifies, reviews, and anticipates emerging regulatory issues. Acts as liaison with local, national, and international regulatory authorities i.e. FDA, WSDA, EPA, etc.
  • Interprets and communicates food industry regulations to facilitate compliance at the plant level i.e. FSMA
  • Translation: Oversees the translation of SDS and technical specification to different language

Other duties as assigned (5%).Who are you?

Background Required:

  • Extensive operational and corporate experience in quality (HPLC, UV, GCMS, LCMS, NIR)
  • Excellent leadership, strategic, and operational skills. Extensive knowledge of quality tools, resource and project planning, project management, and risk analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills including the ability to communicate with all levels of the organization and effectively manage conflict resolution
  •  Laboratory leadership experience.


Education Required:

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Food Science or related field.

A Master’s degree in Food Science is preferred.

Experience and demonstrated technical knowledge and abilities within the fields of brewing and/or hop science.

Total Rewards: Pay will vary depending on someone’s experience and successes. 

 Base pay is targeted at $100K with a targeted annual bonus of 10%, with some flexibility for the right candidate. With the low cost of living in Yakima, one can make a very comfortable living.

Where is this place?

This position is located at the John I. Haas Innovations Center in beautiful Yakima, WA. Yakima is the hub of hops production in North America. Located in the Pacific Northwest on the east side of the Cascade Mountains, the surrounding area offers numerous recreational opportunities. Seattle, WA and Portland, OR are only a short drive (< 3 hours) away. This is a beautiful place for anyone who loves the outdoors and has a passion for diverse agronomy. 


Conditions of Employment

When no special circumstances exist, work is a 40-hour week. There are times, i.e. harvest, this position will require more than eight hours per day and/or to work weekends.
